چکیده

We present a new technique, inspired by zero-knowledge proof systems, for proving lower bounds on approximating the chromatic number of a graph. To illustrate this technique we present simple reductions from max-3-coloring and max-3-sat, showing that it is hard to approximate the chromatic number within (N), for some > 0. We then apply our technique in conjunction with the probabilistically checkable proofs of H astad, and show that it is hard to approximate the chromatic number to within (N 1?) for any > 0, assuming NP 6 6 ZPP. Here, ZPP denotes the class of languages decidable by a random expected polynomial-time algorithm that makes no errors. Our result matches (up to low order terms) the known gap for approximating the size of the largest independent set. Previous O(N) gaps for approximating the chromatic number (such as those by Lund and Yannakakis, and by Furer) did not match the gap for independent set, and do not extend beyond (N 1=2?).

Design of Single Mode Photonic Crystal Fiber with Outstanding Characteristics of Confinement Loss and Chromatic Dispersion over S to L Communication Band

In this article, a novel structure of photonic crystal fiber with nearly zero ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion and ultra-low confinement loss is presented. By replacing the circular air-holes of two first rings with the elliptical air-holes, a fiber with outstanding features of chromatic dispersion and confinement loss is designed. The proposed structure is optimized for operating in a wide...

A module theoretic approach to‎ ‎zero-divisor graph with respect to (first) dual

Let $M$ be an $R$-module and $0 neq fin M^*={rm Hom}(M,R)$. We associate an undirected graph $gf$ to $M$ in which non-zero elements $x$ and $y$ of $M$ are adjacent provided that $xf(y)=0$ or $yf(x)=0$. Weobserve that over a commutative ring $R$, $gf$ is connected anddiam$(gf)leq 3$. Moreover, if $Gamma (M)$ contains a cycle,then $mbox{gr}(gf)leq 4$. Furthermore if $|gf|geq 1$, then$gf$ is finit...

Improvement of Optical Properties in Hexagonal Index-guiding Photonic Crystal Fiber for Optical Communications

Waveguides with low confinement loss, low chromatic dispersion, and low nonlinear effects are used in optical communication systems. Optical fibers can also be employed in such systems. Besides optical fibers, photonic crystal fibers are also highly suitable transmission media for optical communication systems. In this paper, we introduce two new designs of index-guiding photonic crystal fiber ...

Chromatic Harmonic Indices and Chromatic Harmonic Polynomials of Certain Graphs

In the main this paper introduces the concept of chromatic harmonic polynomials denoted, $H^chi(G,x)$ and chromatic harmonic indices denoted, $H^chi(G)$ of a graph $G$. The new concept is then applied to finding explicit formula for the minimum (maximum) chromatic harmonic polynomials and the minimum (maximum) chromatic harmonic index of certain graphs. It is also applied to split graphs and ce...
